Meet Bill Chicurel !
Bill Chicurel was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in Asheville, N.C. He became involved in music and art at an early age, studying piano, violin, and viola. He ran his own music studio while still in high school. Coming to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1972, Bill majored in Zoology as a pre-med. student./
In 1974 he chose to double major in Music with an emphasis in music theory, composition, and pedagogy. He completed a Master of Music degree at U.N.C. in 1979 and continued further doctoral study at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Returning to North Carolina in 1981, Bill taught at the North Carolina Governor’s School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before giving 18 years of service to the United States Postal Service. In 2003 he was forced to retire early due to serious health conditions.
Bill saw this as yet another opportunity to teach and work closely with children and adults. This fall marks his seventh year as a music teacher and co-director of Cely’s House. Bill has over 25 students in his piano studio. He also served as the music and choir director of Orange United Methodist Church for 18 years. He now sings in the choir at the United Church of Chapel Hill and helps with the children's choir on Sunday mornings.
When he is not teaching Bill loves to read and sell his books on the internet.
